Learning Japanese Lesson #3

Ittekimasu (hear it)

Translation: I'm leaving

It's what you say when you're leaving the house. Whoever is staying at home responds with "itterasshai."

Tadaima (hear it)

Translation (literal): (I arrived) Just now

Say this when you come home. "Honey, I'm home," except without the "honey." The response from those already home is, "okaerinasai."

Example:

A.J.: Mom, how do we get to harajuku?
Mom: Eeto, Akasaka kara futaeki - meijijinguumae harajuku to onaji.
(that's Japanese for, "Um, from Akasaka go two stops and get off at
Meiji Jinguu Mae; it's the same as harajuku.")
A.J.: Ok, let's go.
  Us: Ittekimaaaaaaaasu!!!
 Mom: Itterasshai!
And then we get back: Tadaimaaaaa!
Mom upstairs: Okaerinasai. (note, no exclamation point, cuz now she has to take care of us.)
