Why does a brown “H” mean save?
January 16th, 2008 by some dudeThink how mysterious the “Save” icon must be for kids using computers now. The icon is a floppy disk. There are people on computers that have never seen a floppy disk. Someone tell me how kids interpret the floppy drive “Save” icon these days.
Will optical drives (CD/DVD) go the way of the floppy too? Apple’s new laptop doesn’t have one!

I am still upset that it was never a punch card or a big magnetic tape on a reel. I guess it will be an icon that people won’t even really give two thoughts about. One day you’ll overhear someone twenty years old and twenty years younger than you say did you know they use to save files on a magnetic disk encased in plastic and thats why the save icon has that funny looking thing on it.
Do you know why police officers are called cops or the criminal transport vehicle is called a paddy wagon.

sorry Old Man, you’re on your own. I go about as far back as floppy disks actually being floppy. No punch cards for me.
makes me recall a recent conversation I had with my uncle… I was teasing him for turning 50 and made some joke about slide rules, to which he replied:
“Slide rules are very clever devices. Do you know how to use one?”
“No.”
“I have one out in the garage, next time I’m there I’ll get it and show you.”
“Thanks Uncle Joe, I appreciate the offer, but there are so many things you can teach me that I might actually use one day… maybe we can talk about one of them instead?”
“Yeah, ok.”
So the next day, he got out the slide rule and showed me how to use it. Something about logarithms. I spent most of the time wondering if I still knew how to use the log function on my TI-89.
