More than meets the product placement
July 4th, 2007 by some dudeJust saw Transformers. The usual product placement everywhere, so of course all the Autobots were GM cars. But they even had product placement for the planes. All Lockheed. F-22, F-117 stealth fighter, C-130 gunship, F-16. If Lockheed made helicoptors, they could have had air superiority. I don’t remember what planes were on the aircraft carriers…maybe those were someone else’s.

the only planes used in the movie that weren’t Lockheed’s were Fairchild Republic’s [taken over by M7 Aerospace back in ‘03] A-10 Thunderbolt II, Boeing’s VC-25 [i.e. Air Force One] and C-17 Globemaster III, and General Atomics’ MQ-1 Predator UAV.
Lookin’ forward to seeing it in Shortpump tomorrow. What did ya think of it?

Does product placement work for million to billion dollar assets typically developed and purchased by wealthy world states? My guess is that military planes make bad consumer products, but perhaps LM isn’t selling to consumers but rather trying to hire them.

I think it’s actually more the DoD using all their toys to lure kids to serve. And for a Lockheed or Boeing, it’s the cool factor. The kind of stuff that makes most people assume, “Of course our government needs to spend billions and billions of dollars for all this cool stuff,” instead of questioning it.
The movie is good though.
So I guess they weren’t all Lockheed, but still a lot.

Indeed. I just got a new book called The Sling and The Stone. It’s about the tactics insurgencies use to defeat super-powers such as the US. One of the author’s main points: the DoD’s high-tech toys won’t necessarily help us in unconventional warfare.
Check it out…

I’m pretty sure one of the new generation Transformers turns into a Tomcat, which, being a Navy bird, is likely what was on the carrier… by the way, anybody in the area is free to drop by and see the 14 baby rats (while they are still here) and play with the Generation 1 Transformers I have. I’ve got Megatron (as the 9mm pistol), Jetfire, Shockwave, and I think maybe Ultra Magnus… unless my brother took him, when we split them up…
