This annoys me to no end - especially when it messes with perfectly valid XHTML. Anyway, I installed a plugin called <a href="http://dev.wp-plugins.org/wiki/TextControl" rel="nofollow">Text Control</a> that allows you to select the type of formatting and filtering for each post. While editing a post scroll down until you see Text Control and then select No Formatting from the first pulldown.
